STARTER SOLUTION
FOR USE IN REFILLING HEWLETT-PACKARD 51641A, C1823, C6578, C6625, & PHOTOSMART C3844A & C3845A CARTRIDGES

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

1. Place the cartridge in a tight fitting clip to prevent color crossover while refilling.

2. Using a map tack or similar instrument, push each of the three fill hole plugs into the cartridge.

3. Using a 3-1/2" [9cm] long needle that reaches almost to the bottom of the cartridge, inject 1cc of starter solution into each color chamber. Be careful to avoid puncturing the screen at the bottom of the middle chamber, which is located higher up than the screens in the side chambers. (Flush the needle with clean water when switching colors.) If the cartridge is dried out allow the cartridge to stand, nozzles down, overnight before adding inks. If it has just run out of ink allow it to stand for about 10 minutes. If the cartridge has been empty for a period of time allow the starter solution to work overnight before adding ink.

4. Using GRAVITY FEED, dispense 5 to 6cc of ink into each color chamber with a 3-1/2" [9cm] long needle. This will prevent turbulence at the needle tip.

5. DO NOT reseal the fill holes. Air must be allowed to replace the ink as it is printed out.

SUGGESTED ACCESSORIES:
#SYR10MOD - Repeat-O-Type offers specially designed, patent pending, syringes with 3-1/2" long needles which make gravity feeding very convenient. We suggest ordering three to avoid having to flush clean between colors.

#CTGCLIP - These clips are designed to hold the cartridge while filling. The absorbent pad at the base of the clip prevents color crossover between ink chambers.

REFILLING TIPS
HP 51641A, C1823, C6578, C6625, PHOTOSMART C3844A & C3845A CARTRIDGES

1. On some cartridges the fill holes are located at the end of the cartridge top, directly above the printhead. On other cartridges the fill holes are near the middle of the cartridge top. On these cartridges tilt the needle toward the printhead so that the liquids are dispensed close to the printhead.

2. Avoid tilting the needle toward the sidewalls of the cartridge because the walls of the cartridge have horizontal ribs and if the needle tip hits a rib it will be stopped from penetrating any further down. Also, the ink will not be absorbed into the sponge and will start dripping from the printhead.

3. If one or more of the colors do not print after filling, place the printhead on an absorbent pad and blow into the fill holes of those colors. This will force the fresh ink down to the printhead. Run a print test again to make sure all three colors are printing.

4. Do not overfill the cartridge. We have found that cartridges filled with more than 6cc are difficult to get started. Also, if any of the chambers still contain ink from the previous fill you can run into problems.

5. To speed the refilling process you can fill the cyan and yellow chambers at the same time.

6. Allow the pad on the cartridge clip to dry out between uses so that it can absorb any ink that leaks from the cartridge while filling. This prevents cross contamination of ink colors.

7. Test for air leaks in the cartridge (especially along the seams of the magenta compartment) before refilling. Affix a short piece of rubber tubing to the outlet of a 10cc syringe. Draw the plunger out to the 10cc mark. Push the vent plugs into the cartridge. Press the rubber syringe tip against the vent hole to make an airtight connection. Depress the syringe plunger quickly to build up pressure in the cartridge and quickly lift it away. If you hear a rush of compressed air leaving the cartridge you will know that there are no air leaks in the cartridge chamber. If you do not hear a rush of air, do not bother filling that cartridge. All three chambers can be tested this way. But most leaks will be found in the center chamber.
